HENNA FAQs
Common questions about Henna
Henna is a natural dye that comes from the leaves of a shrub called Lawsonia Inermis . The natural color that Henna provides is a coppery color. It is frequently used in countries such as India, Pakistan, the Middle East and Africa.
Henna has been used since the Bronze Age to dye fabrics, skin and hair.
This is an alternative to chemical colouring. In this case, the colour is extracted naturally from plants. Henna strengthens, adds shine and volume to the hair at the same time as colouring.
Henna coloring consists of creating a film on each hair, covering it and providing color. Once applied, Henna is washed away naturally, so it is recommended to apply it every 3-4 weeks to maintain the hair color.
For coloring, it is usual to do it once a month to obtain a better result.
To apply Henna, you must ALWAYS have clean hair. The paste adheres better to dry hair, but it can also be applied to damp hair. However, your hair must always be clean so that no external agent can affect the colouring.
We always recommend doing a test on a strand before applying it to your entire hair.
Henna for hair and henna for tattoos are not the same, as they both come from the same plant, but have been treated differently.
Yes indeed. Each and every one of our formulations contains 100% organic plants.
Henna (Lawsonia Inermis) results in a coppery colour. At Radhe Shyam we sell hair dyes made from pure Henna and dyeing plants in powder form. The different colours in our Henna line are a mixture of pure Henna (as a base) and a mixture of other plants, herbs and natural plant elements. From Chamomile to Indigo, Campeche or Katam, these are additional ingredients that allow us to mix the colour wheel based on plants from nature and obtain fantastic, organic and natural shades.
Radhe Shyam Neutral Henna is actually pure Cassia Obovata. Cassia conditions the hair and shares the hair treatment benefits of Henna, but it does not dye the hair like Henna does. It enhances blonde tones and shades, or colors gray hair slightly blonde; brunettes and redheads will not notice a color change, but it will add shine and strength to the hair.
There is no specific color chart for Henna. As these are natural products, the resulting color cannot be determined exactly, but it can be approximated.
They always reflect the colour of your hair. That is to say, a person with dark hair will not be able to achieve a light hair colour. But a person with light hair can achieve a dark colour.
The result of the coloring will depend on the person's hair history (depending on whether it has ever been dyed or not, whether the dye was with a chemical or natural dye, the pH, oxidation of the plant, etc.).
Yes, you can. There is no problem when mixing the plants together, although we always recommend doing a test on a strand before applying the product.
We recommend that you follow these steps to achieve optimal results when applying henna to your hair:
1. Put very hot water
2. Pour the water into a non-metallic bowl;
3. Apply the Henna powders in the water
4. Stir and mix until a paste is created
5. Apply ½ squeezed lemon to the paste to intensify the color and a little conditioning balm. Leave to soak for 30 minutes.
6. When the paste is hot to lukewarm, apply to the hair in sections from the roots to the tips.
7. Once applied to all of the hair, cover with a towel to apply heat to the hair.
8. Let the Henna sit on your hair for 1-2:30 hours, depending on the Henna.
9. After the time has passed, rinse your hair with lukewarm water. When all the mud has been removed from your head, wash your hair with the appropriate Radhe Shyam Henna Shampoos. To soften your hair, we recommend applying Radhe Shyam Conditioning Balm.
10. The result will be a reinforced, shiny hair, with volume and highlights of the desired color.
Yes, you can, but with some conditions:
-We recommend waiting three to four weeks if you have previously dyed your hair with a conventional chemical dye or bleaching, before applying Henna, in order to avoid the two dyes mixing and causing an unwanted color.
-If the dye you have applied is an ammonia-free dye, there would be no problem using Henna. It would add shine and volume to the hair. But as we mentioned before, we recommend doing a test on a strand.
Yes, you can dye gray hair with Henna. To be able to cover gray hair with Henna, you need to do a double application with Henna colors.
It is necessary to apply a base color first and then the desired color. We recommend applying the colors individually and not mixing them for a better result.
The first application will depend on the desired hair colour/shade: First apply Radhe Shyam Natural Copper Henna (Lawsonia Inermis – will dye grey hair a copper colour) for dark colours or Radhe Shyam Neutral Henna (Cassia Obovata – will dye grey hair slightly blonde) for light colours. For the next application, choose the desired colour.
This double application is necessary because Henna works by creating a film on each hair. The thicker the film, the more intense the color will be and the less gray the hair will be.
Note : Always talk to your doctor or pediatrician first before applying Henna if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Unless you have specific allergies to Henna-based products, dyeing your hair during pregnancy will not cause any problems.
Yes, this product can be used on boys and girls. What's more, it helps make hair stronger and also prevents the appearance of lice. We also have hair treatments made from plants, which have different properties that can also be applied to them.
Henna is suitable for all hair types. Remember that we recommend applying henna to a strand of hair first so you can see how it looks.
The prepared henna mixture can be stored in the refrigerator or frozen depending on how soon you want to apply henna again.
At Radhe Shyam we recommend adding a natural acid to the henna paste to enhance the colour. In our case, we recommend adding ½ lemon squeezed into the henna paste to help it macerate better and enhance the colour.
We recommend adding a spoonful of Radhe Shyam Conditioning Balm to the Henna paste to help with application and removal, as Henna is astringent and dries out the hair and scalp. However, once the Henna is removed, we recommend applying the balm to your hair to moisturise it a bit more. It will not only moisturise your hair but also add shine and softness.
The first few showers after applying Radhe Shyam Henna may cause some fading. This is normal until you wash it off with Radhe Shyam Shampoo of your choice for the first time.
The factors that determine whether it fades to a greater or lesser extent are: the application process, the current health of the hair and previous colorings.
Healthy hair will fade very little after the first wash. Henna, Indigo and the other accompanying Hair Treatments like to attach themselves to the healthy hair proteins in naturally lubricated hair shafts.
If you have had any chemical processing done before a Henna treatment, it is possible that it will fade more than healthy hair, it simply requires more time to restore the proper pigment retention capacity.
As you apply Natural Hair Treatments or Henna-based hair colors and your hair becomes free from coloring or chemical processes, your hair will fade less and will peak pigment retention faster.
Tip: Use old, dark colored towels for applications and initial showers. Henna and Indigo may stain fabric, but most stubborn stains will wash out.
NEVER. Not at all. It goes against our philosophy.
